Ravens are among the most intelligent birds. They have a complex language and even cooperate with mammal carnivores by leading them to prey or carcasses (sometimes it takes teeth to rip open a frozen carcass). In Yellowstone, where I made this image, some ravens have even figured out how to open zippers to get food in packs and snowmobile saddlebags. This raven pretty much ignored me as it was preening, then paused and gave me this brief look. I may be anthropomorphizing, but I felt intelligence behind those eyes.
