Top of the World. Pika on the Beartooth Plateau, Wyoming.
Pika, along with mountain goats, are my favorite alpine animals. Both are super-tough animals that live in some of the harshest, highest environments in North America, year-round - they don't migrate to lower elevations to escape winter. In this particular talus slope at about 11,000' on the Beartooth Plateau, pika often climb to exposed perches as dawn approaches to catch the first warmth of the sun, as this one is doing.
